League Cup: is it really?

Author Rafael Costa on Friday, November 20, 2009 No Comments

Carlsberg Cup, the name given to our League Cup grounds advertising pie was born and so continues. In fact it is a shame that has not yet found a credible model for this competition. This is a cup that is lacking in the national football scene. Not because it is just a title at stake but mainly because it can be a valuable showcase for young players and other less used. Many have criticized the attitude of FC Porto in past editions, but the use of young players by tetra national champions is an attitude towards sensible. It shows forward thinking by the leaders of the northern club, not lack of respect for the competition.

Consider this. How else can players still in the age of junior or newly promoted to the first category could play with some regularity? League Progress? There seems to be a competition with the levels required to prepare players who want to earn a place in the first team. For many years, the Portuguese Football Federation organized a league of reserves that gave grist to the clubs to keep the so-called "second best" fit, able to respond effectively when called to the first team if necessary. This model of competition is still active in most leagues named across Europe, as is the case in England. On grounds of his majesty the league has proven reserves of major stars and is a player monica to the Premiership. And that is to say, some games have as much or more quality than some that have the (dis) pleasure of watching in our rectangle. Another function of the English League reserves is to recover the competitive pace of players just out of complicated lesions. A real service to football.

In Portugal tried to training teams "B". Initially up with some success. An idea to cheer but that was short lived. Our model was a rough copy of which exists in Spain. But, our neighbors have a financial capacity with which we can not even dream it comparable. Just remember that Getafe, a club struggling for permanence in the first league, which recently faced (and eliminated!) Benfica in the former UEFA Cup, had a budget much higher than their opponent. I can not stress how conflicting are the principle objectives of these two time courses. Getafe struggle to not fall while Benfica aims to reach the national title. All this to demonstrate the reason why the team "B" was a good idea, but doomed at birth. These formations found themselves wrapped in a competition calendar and financial burdens, for a lot of goodwill that the directions were not able to bear. It is the law of the market.

However, we, then, the crux of the matter. How to keep routines planted during the numerous stops in our competitions? The clubs are unable to pay the players who spend a lot of time apart, or because of the commitments of the selections or vacation. The form found, and well, was the creation of a new competition: Carlsberg Cup As I said, the idea was good. He joined business with pleasure: competition and financial input to the clubs, especially for the little ones. What happens is that the competition is poorly structured and the rules are very confusing and are not cemented. All this turned a good idea into a mess. And even becomes greater when a single competition mix different models: qualifying, group stage, and again playoffs. Tie-breaking factors are not sufficiently well defined, causing perfectly avoidable situations such as that the academy this issue. It should create a solid model and understandable it for the competition is shrouded in discossões sports only. The real football fans, side issues do not matter and they are unnecessary.

A good model of the League Cup comes to France. The competition is held every year, with long history and, to guarantee a place in Europe for the league winner. A healthy way to guarantee revenue to those who have less opportunity to achieve and promote the rotation of representation sports across borders. But this is something dangerous to the status quo in football pPortuguese installed. Needless to say, the format is more consolidated than that just a place to playoffs.
And besides, there were no reports of major cases involving the French League Cup. It would be great for football and Portuguese for the credibility of sport and a competition that you were willing to play the good ideas that can be drawn across borders. Who sees the football like the sport, would appreciate. Hopefully ClubIT that pervades our football allows. When this happens, we consider the Carlsberg Cup as a serious competition and not as another cup, the "beer" and popular as it is disparagingly known. A competition that no one gives any value.
